From the day we first announced this initiative via the Proclamation, we've been balancing the slow, careful release of information about what this all is, while at the same time working to clarify impressions of what all this is not. Here is where we compile what is known, and what is left to reveal.
Over the past week we’ve fielded plenty of questions. Given our intentionally mysterious Proclamation announcement, and the limited amount of information as to our intent, we expected to see our audience’s imaginations fill in the blanks, with plenty of clarification work on our plates. And given a popularly held sentiment that is unfavourable to NFTs in any form, we understand well the need to clear up the potential misunderstanding that our Lotus NFTs are merely a copy of something old, when in fact they are the beginning of something brand new.
To be clear, we cannot and will not tell you what your Lotus NFT means to you. But we must clearly state what it means to us:
Your Lotus NFT is not a Black Lotus Magic: the Gathering card.
Your Lotus NFT is not, and is not intended to be, a reproduction in whole or in part, of a Black Lotus card from the game of Magic: The Gathering or any of its associated intellectual properties. No art for this collection contains any imagery, symbols or references to the original card art or game, from which the physical card seen in the ceremony video is a component.
Your Lotus NFT does not work in the game of Magic: The Gathering, either in paper play or any online versions, or any other physical or digital games for that matter. Nor is it intended to work that way.
Your Lotus NFT is a digital art work, whose value derives from the beauty and desirability of its associated art you can cryptographically prove you own. It shares an origin story with 9999 other works of art.
Your Lotus NFT is also a symbolic digital souvenir of the Ceremony in which a physical Black Lotus card was destroyed, an event along the timeline of a story we develop together, participating in good faith.
Your Lotus NFT is a cryptographic tool, a piece of immutable code deployed on the blockchain forever.
Your Lotus NFT is part of a series, cryptographically connected to its 1999 Alpha Edition sisters.
That’s all: Nothing more.
